Everything just changed for Reproductive Rights in Mexico

This month, we show what abortion rights mean to individuals. It’s a new idea we’re exploring for our monthly newsletter, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths.

Inhale.

Exhale.

You are Ana.

You’re 23 years old. Sitting in your room. Alone.

You’ve just taken a pregnancy test, and the result is clear.

Positive.

Your mind goes blank. There’s a heavy pit in your stomach. Your heart is pounding so loud it drowns out every other thought.

This wasn’t the plan. You don’t want this. Not now.

And deep inside, you already know — you need another option.

You want an abortion. Because you know your life, your body, and your future. And you know you deserve to choose.

But your grandmother told you abortion was once a crime. Your mother shared stories of women who had to do it in silence, in fear, in danger. In 2007, two-thirds of Mexico believed abortion should be punished.

But that’s not the country you live in anymore.

Mexican abortion rights are shifting

Now, only 28% of people still think abortion is a crime. Even 81% of Catholics support legal access. Compassion is winning.

Open your eyes. You’re in Tabasco. And just this month, everything changed.

Tabasco became the 23rd state in Mexico to decriminalize abortion — up to 12 weeks. A historic vote: 33 in favor, only 1 against. Backed by the Supreme Court. Protected by updated national health guidelines. You’re not just protected — you’re seen.

And that… changes everything.

Now you can seek care without fear. You can ask questions, get support, be heard. You can make your decision safely, with dignity.

Because your body is not a crime scene.
It’s your own.

And you, Ana, are no longer alone.
