AbortionData´s presentation at the Cryptorave 2024
São Paulo, Brazil – AbortionData was invited to deliver a compelling presentation at the Cryptorave last Friday. The presentation underscored the transformative power of the internet and digital spaces in advancing the cause of abortion rights.
“When we talk about abortions, we are basically hacking the system”, said AbortionData´s founder Lina Lopez. “In areas or countries where abortion is legally or socially restricted, the internet allows for the dissemination of accurate information and resources to those in need. This has been a game changer for people seeking safe abortions in these areas.”
In the presentation, Lopez and AbortionData representatives Gisela Foz and Renata Martinelli delved into the different ways that abortion rights activism can harness the internet to spread accurate information, connect individuals, and mobilize support. The team outlined the strategic use of social media, websites, and online campaigns as tools to break through the stigma surrounding abortion and to provide essential resources regarding abortion care and rights.
This also enabled AbortionData to have successful collaborations with other organizations or activists, leading to innovative approaches in utilizing the internet for abortion rights activism.
Despite the potential of digital spaces, Lopez, Foz and Martinelli did not shy away from addressing the significant challenges faced by activists, including censorship, information bans, and website blockages. These obstacles often hinder the free flow of information and support, yet they also serve as a call to action for innovation and collaboration within the movement.
“Prioritizing individual safety precautions is crucial in safeguarding our digital lives when discussing or researching abortion information”, said Martinelli. “We can navigate these challenges if we organize ourselves to monitor and create evidence about these bans.”
