Of those, 31% were for risk to the life of the pregnant person, 49% for fetal non-viability and 20% for rape<sup data-fn=\"c31a8f10-5986-4c60-b046-0ac855f31e70\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c31a8f10-5986-4c60-b046-0ac855f31e70\" id=\"c31a8f10-5986-4c60-b046-0ac855f31e70-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>. According to the Chilean press in 2022, of the 1,269 doctors hired in hospitals, 599, that is 47%, are not willing to perform an abortion on the grounds of rape, showing how abortion stigma is still widely prevalent in the healthcare community <sup data-fn=\"33616099-441f-4447-bc95-b7751da35432\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#33616099-441f-4447-bc95-b7751da35432\" id=\"33616099-441f-4447-bc95-b7751da35432-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>. It is important to note that in the special report of the Regional Alert System on Sexual and Reproductive Rights by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mujeresdelsur-afm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/InformeSAR_vX06.pdf\">Articulaci\u00f3n Feminista Marcosur<\/a>, a total of seven alerts were reported from 2021 to 2022. One of these seven alerts was related to abortion. This alert means despite the right for abortion under &nbsp;the three legal grounds it is still not guaranteed <sup data-fn=\"7ea9f2f9-c421-45e4-a3e7-0252ec6341b2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#7ea9f2f9-c421-45e4-a3e7-0252ec6341b2\" id=\"7ea9f2f9-c421-45e4-a3e7-0252ec6341b2-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"state-of-abortion-law\">State of abortion law<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">Although Chile has three legal grounds for abortion, the right to decide freely, autonomously, and in an informed manner about the voluntary termination of pregnancy is still lacking. There is still a long way to go to guarantee sexual and reproductive justice in the country <sup data-fn=\"3adcf1da-b722-4964-9060-4bfaa66e70a1\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3adcf1da-b722-4964-9060-4bfaa66e70a1\" id=\"3adcf1da-b722-4964-9060-4bfaa66e70a1-link\">4<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:63px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"rh-color-heading alignfull pt30 pb30 blackcolor mb35\" style=\"background-color:#ebf2fc;\"><style>.main-side:not(.alignfulloutside):not(.fullgutenberg) .rh-color-heading .rh-container{width:auto;}<\/style>\t<div class=\"rh-container pr25 pl25\">\t\t\t<p id=\"what-does-the-law-say-in-chile\" class=\"mb15 font130\" style=\"color:#111;\">\t\t\tWhat does the law say in Chile?\t\t\t<\/p>\t\t\t<h2 class=\"mt0 mb10 font200\" style=\"color:#111;\">\t\t\tAbortion Rights \t\t\t<\/h2>\t<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-center\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0;font-size:16px\"><blockquote><p><br><em>&#8220;Voluntary termination of pregnancy is decriminalized, by a medical surgeon, on the grounds set forth:&nbsp; <strong>1) <\/strong>The woman is at vital risk, so the interruption of the pregnancy avoids danger to her life;<\/em> <em><strong>2)<\/strong> The embryo or fetus suffers from an acquired congenital or genetic pathology incompatible with independent extrauterine life, in any case of lethal character; <\/em> <em><strong>3)<\/strong> It results from rape, provided that no more than twelve weeks of gestation have elapsed. In the case of a girl under 14 years of age, the termination of pregnancy may be performed provided that no more than fourteen weeks of gestation have elapsed.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcn.cl\/leychile\/navegar?idNorma=1108237\" class=\"ek-link\">LAW 21030 &#8211; MINISTRY OF HEALTH &#8211; ART. 119<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">Since 2017, Law No. 21,030 has established that a person may terminate a pregnancy in three instances. All other cases are punishable by imprisonment; the three instances are <sup data-fn=\"0e29eba4-08dd-40f3-aacf-4ec120000936\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#0e29eba4-08dd-40f3-aacf-4ec120000936\" id=\"0e29eba4-08dd-40f3-aacf-4ec120000936-link\">5<\/a><\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.gs-box{padding:20px;border-left:5px solid transparent;margin-bottom:25px}.gs-box-text > p{margin-bottom:20px;margin-top:0}.gs-box-text > p:last-of-type{margin-bottom:0}.gs-box.updatelight_type{color:#004458;border:2px solid #bce8f1;border-radius:12px}#gspb_infoBox-id-gsbp-e09d98c .gs-box{border-style:solid;border-width:3px;border-color:#9f88d1;}#gspb_infoBox-id-gsbp-e09d98c .gs-box:hover{border-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-greenshift-blocks-infobox gspb_infoBox gspb_infoBox-id-gsbp-e09d98c\" id=\"gspb_infoBox-id-gsbp-e09d98c\"><div class=\"gs-box updatelight_type \"><div class=\"gs-box-icon\"><\/div><div class=\"gs-box-text\">\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-main-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3a548d2ba7048a0a6fdb46e8fb613477\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-main-color\">When the pregnant person\u2019s life is at risk,&nbsp;<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-main-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-aa954f768dea7ff0491e7bfe1236f8b0\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">When the fetus has a malformation,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-main-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c6b1d3e24875f8d320ec0bb9673f251e\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">When the pregnancy results from sexual abuse, the law states that any pregnant person under the age of 14 is automatically considered a victim of sexual abuse <sup data-fn=\"7b5c92f8-a260-4d0f-a42c-48806bf493d9\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#7b5c92f8-a260-4d0f-a42c-48806bf493d9\" id=\"7b5c92f8-a260-4d0f-a42c-48806bf493d9-link\">6<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"will-of-the-person-with-gestational-capacity\">Will of the person with gestational capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">The person must give written consent to terminate the pregnancy <sup data-fn=\"ac9623f8-f801-4207-a2dc-d962f1fbda3b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ac9623f8-f801-4207-a2dc-d962f1fbda3b\" id=\"ac9623f8-f801-4207-a2dc-d962f1fbda3b-link\">7<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Different means of communication are provided for persons with sensory, visual, and hearing disabilities, as well as persons with mental or intellectual disabilities so that they can give their consent<sup data-fn=\"b7b55dcf-5cab-4137-9476-8e71967af4ca\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b7b55dcf-5cab-4137-9476-8e71967af4ca\" id=\"b7b55dcf-5cab-4137-9476-8e71967af4ca-link\">8<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">If the person has been declared incompetent due to insanity, they must have the authorization of their legal representative<sup data-fn=\"19ad6c36-8f58-4f6c-bea4-7f77daa100f6\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#19ad6c36-8f58-4f6c-bea4-7f77daa100f6\" id=\"19ad6c36-8f58-4f6c-bea4-7f77daa100f6-link\">9<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"under-18-years-of-age\">Under 18 years of age<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">People between 14 and 18 years old who will terminate their pregnancy must inform one of their legal representatives<sup data-fn=\"06a0cba8-a9fc-43ad-91c3-7d10272c5035\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#06a0cba8-a9fc-43ad-91c3-7d10272c5035\" id=\"06a0cba8-a9fc-43ad-91c3-7d10272c5035-link\">10<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">Minors under fourteen must also inform the legal representative of their choice. Also, if your representative refuses or is not found, a member of health will assist the person in requesting the intervention of a judge to verify the cause of the termination of pregnancy. This request shouldn\u2019t take more than 48 hours<sup data-fn=\"ef425a00-7a9c-4d2a-b03d-d9f1665ac150\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ef425a00-7a9c-4d2a-b03d-d9f1665ac150\" id=\"ef425a00-7a9c-4d2a-b03d-d9f1665ac150-link\">11<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"information-about-the-procedure\">Information about the procedure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">Health personnel should provide timely, truthful, and understandable information about the characteristics of the procedure. This information includes the health status of the person to be treated, the risks of the intervention, the different alternatives, and the value of the service. The information is not intended to influence the woman&#8217;s decision but only to ensure that the person knows the different alternatives <sup data-fn=\"af795992-83ed-4584-be8c-218f2caffa58\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#af795992-83ed-4584-be8c-218f2caffa58\" id=\"af795992-83ed-4584-be8c-218f2caffa58-link\">12<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"accompanying-program\">Accompanying program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">People have the right to an accompaniment program which must follow the following actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">In case of deciding to continue with the pregnancy, it will deliver information on their health condition and activate support networks,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">The person must authorize the accompaniment,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">The Ministry of Health and Finance will regulate the service and establish criteria to ensure they offer non-profit support,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">The person can freely choose the accompaniment entity,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:15px\">The person can denounce the accompaniment offered if it doesn&#8217;t follow the law<sup data-fn=\"a79cf23d-e1d1-4e75-a4c3-205f52b29e0a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a79cf23d-e1d1-4e75-a4c3-205f52b29e0a\" id=\"a79cf23d-e1d1-4e75-a4c3-205f52b29e0a-link\">13<\/a><\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conscientious-objection\">Conscientious objection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">The physician may refuse to terminate a pregnancy and must inform the health facility&#8217;s director so that a replacement may be sought. However, suppose the person requires immediate medical attention because their life is at risk. As demonstrated in other contexts, legal restrictions do not eliminate the need for abortions. According to the last official estimation, there were approximately 160,000-200,000 abortions in Chile by 1990. Specialists predicted that this number would rise to 300,000 by 2015. However, there is not enough data to confirm those figures or to know more about the current scenario, since the Ministry of Health has not collected related information recently <sup data-fn=\"e9b785cf-3404-4ec6-ab0f-1b06e13f32df\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e9b785cf-3404-4ec6-ab0f-1b06e13f32df\" id=\"e9b785cf-3404-4ec6-ab0f-1b06e13f32df-link\">15<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">Scholars analyzed hospital discharge data of abortion-related cases between 2001 and 2010 and determined that 72% were unsafe abortions. An estimated 24,300 induced abortions took place each year during this period <sup data-fn=\"5b76e189-3c1a-4f4a-a357-b56bb2f20102\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5b76e189-3c1a-4f4a-a357-b56bb2f20102\" id=\"5b76e189-3c1a-4f4a-a357-b56bb2f20102-link\">16<\/a><\/sup>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:15px\">However, this method carries certain limitations, as the frequency of health complications from unsafe abortions that require hospitalization is decreasing. From 2018 to 2021, officially, 2,774 cases of abortion were reported.
